The Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime in the US and the Bureau of Justice Assistance have developed an e-Guide on anti-human trafficking. A “White Paper” (102 pages) synthesizes and distills the research on what works to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes for youth in the juvenile justice system. They also provide examples illustrating how state and local juvenile justice officials in the US have established particular policies and system interventions to implement these principles. Recognizing that improved outcomes are possible only when research on what works is implemented with fidelity, Part Two of the paper details lessons learned from research and practice on how to implement the principles effectively, and provides examples of how state and local juvenile justice systems have operationalized the principles in practice. Decades of study have revealed much about risk factors for delinquency and crime. Individual characteristics and various factors can increase the probability of offending and may also predict substance abuse, and other problems during adolescence and early adulthood. Because risk factors can predict future criminal behavior, prevention and intervention programs focus on mitigating them in a young person’s life. In addition, longitudinal studies have identified protective factors that inhibit criminal behavior. Programs that strengthen these protective factors can reduce the risk of delinquency. Most prevention and intervention programs that address risk factors have not been adequately evaluated. This article gives a short overview of what has been done over the last years.
